Velocette Photographs

The following photographs are a small sample taken from personal albums which belonged to Peter Goodman. Peter is known to many Velocette enthusiasts as a talented rider and he competed in many races in the 1930's and 40's including the TT in 1947, where he finished third in the Senior race and fourth in the Junior race on a works machine, sharing the fastest lap with Artie Bell. Peter was the works director at Velocette until the factory closed in 1971.

The albums are a historical treasure trove of images, most of which have never been publicly available, and a selection will be digitally enhanced and presented in an 11 x 8.5 inch photo book compiled by Peter’s son, Mark Goodman. This will be accompanied by original editorial written by Mark and other surviving members of Peter’s family.

Whilst scanning some old negatives of the Velocette Roarer taken at the factory (see below) I found a picture of myself on the same strip of film, that's me having a snack, and my mother and sister. This must date the film to the late 50's unless the family photos were taken at a later date on an older, undeveloped role of film.

The Roarer was developed in the 30's and used only in practice by the legendary Stanley woods in the 1939 TT. After the war the internal parts were removed and it was used as a show machine in a number of Velocette dealerships.

The pictures of the internal parts are from printed photographs that were probably taken when the machine was being built in the late 30's
